Jakarta, Nawacitapost.com - April 22nd 2022 Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (MoECRT) will lead the G20 Culture Ministers’ Meeting in September. Prior to this, the Ministry holds the 1st Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) G20, on Friday (22/4). Delegations from G20 member countries, special invitee countries, and international organizations participate in this meeting.

The series of G20 Culture is themed under “Culture for Sustainable Living”. MoECRT, in this matter, reflects on the post pandemic situation. “Pandemic has revealed the latent fragility in our modern lifestyle. We no longer talk about poverty, inequality, and injustice, but rather about the livelihood of humans as a species. To recover together, and recover stronger, we need a new way of sustainable living,” says Director General of Culture, MoECRT, Hilmar Farid.

Hilmar mentions two primary objectives of Indonesia in taking the G20 Culture leadership. First, to build global consensus for a sustainable new normal, and second, to initiate the global recovery agenda through a collective action networking establishment in the cultural sector.

Directing the first SOM G20 Culture, Hilmar Farid says that the meeting will focus on discussing the role of culture in promoting sustainable living. “This meeting will explore a new normal possibility, which is the transition towards a development policy that is oriented more on social-ecology justice based on cultural resources,” explains Hilmar in Jakarta, Friday (22/4).

Five Agenda Discussed in SOM

Hilmar mentions there will be five primary issues that will be discussed in this meeting. First, regarding the role of culture as a driver of sustainable living. Secondly, concerning the economic, environmental and social impacts of culture-based policies. Third, the cultural commoning that promotes sustainable lifestyle at local level.

Fourth, challenges for equitable access to the advantages of the cultural economy will be considered. Fifth, the international resource mobilization that is needed to mainstream sustainable recovery from the pandemic will be decided upon.

Hilmar explains that in promoting this new lifestyle, culture plays a pivotal role. “We have inherited diverse knowledge, institutions, cultural expressions, and practices that have passed through the test of time, and these have been brought into this modern age. If these various cultural resources are consolidated, we will have the means to realize a more sustainable lifestyle,” Hilmar says.

“This is the cultural way the Indonesia Presidency in G20 offers,” Hilmar emphasizes.

The summit of G20 Culture is the Culture Ministers’ Meeting (CMM) which will be held in the complex of Candi Borobudur, Magelang, Central Java, on September 12th and 13th 2022.In this meeting, MoECRT through the Directorate General of Culture will hold a series of events, such as Cultural Carnival, Gigantic Meeting, G20 Concert, and ‘Ruwatan Bumi’ or Freeing the Earth.
